Garud commando of the IAF’s special forces unit, Amit Kumar (29), was cremated at his native village Bussal in Baroh tehsil today. Amit was killed during a parachute jump in Agra on Thursday.
Kangra ASP Dinesh Kumar said Amit jumped from over 6,000 feet from AN 32 aircraft during a training session. His parachute did not open and he suffered a fall. Amit was taken to the military hospital, where he was declared dead. He had tied the knot two years ago. The pyre was lit by his younger brother Anil Kumar. Locals in large numbers gathered to pay their last respects. Ankush Sharma, SDM, Nagrota Bagwan, said the state government would give a relief of Rs 4 lakh to the family. MLA Arun Mehra, Naib Tehsildar Narinder Jamwal and IAF officers were also present.

JAMMU: Two suspected terrorists on Friday night snatched the service rifle of the Kishtwar deputy commissioner’s personal security officer (PSO).

Deputy commissioner Angrez Singh Rana said two unidentified gunmen knocked at the door of my PSO’s rented accommodation in Kishtwar town at around 8.45 pm and trained guns on him and his son. They asked the PSO to hand over his official weapon, an AK-47 rifle, and three magazines to them. After taking away the weapon, its magazines and the PSO’s mobile phone, they fled from the spot,” Rana said.
“Soon after the incident, PSO Dalip Kumar called me and narrated the incident. He lives near Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Kishtwar town,” the deputy commissioner said, adding that police were on the job to crack the case.
Police said the area was immediately cordoned off and a massive hunt had been launched to nab the gunmen and recover the looted weapon. The PSO was also being questioned, the police said.
Suspected terrorists killed a senior BJP leader and his brother in the town in November last year. The case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency but the culprits are still at large.
