Ex-serviceman accused of drug peddling

Amritsar, October 22

The Amritsar rural police today said an ex-serviceman was reportedly involved in the drug racket in which 7.5 kg of heroin was seized yesterday.

The suspect has been identified as Prabhjit Singh of Kakkar village. He retired from the Indian Army around two months ago. The accused is still at large.

Gurdev Singh, alias Sonu, and Major Singh, who have been arrested, confessed that Prabjit assisted them, the police said. SPS Parmar, IG, Border Range, said Gurdev had links with a Pakistan-based smuggler, Khodar.

They allegedly used the Prabhjit’s tractor to cross the fence in the guise of tilling land. They used to bring heroin, kept in their fields by Pakistan smugglers, by hiding it in a cavity of their tractor’s battery. — TNS
