Rising terrorism in Kashmir poses challenges to Modi 3.0

Cross border terrorism has al ways been a significant issue for the country and politics. The intruders and infiltrators are a matter of prime concern. Nevertheless, with the forma tion of Prime Minister Nar endra Modi’s 3.0 government, the sudden surge in terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kash mir in the last one month has raised many questions. Since the formation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third government, there has been a surge in terrorist in cidents in Jammu and Kash mir over the past month, prompting several questions. One major query is whether terrorists and Pakistan, the neighboring country, have been emboldened by Modi’s failure to secure a major ity on his own. Additionally, there are concerns whether terrorists aim to disrupt the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir, given the enthusiastic voter turn out in the valley during the recent Lok Sabha elections, which dampened their mo rale. Moreover, terrorists appear frustrated by India’s steadfast stance on reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The surge in terrorist activi ties began immediately after PM Modi’s third-term oath taking and shows no signs of abating. On 9th June itself, a bus was attacked in the valley in which 9 people were killed. After this, terrorists attacked offi cers’ vehicles and police posts on different days in the month of June itself. After the in creasing incidents, PM Modi held a high level meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other officers and gave strict instructions. Af ter this, the army and police took action and targeted the terrorists. But on last Monday, terrorists ambushed military vehicles in Kathua and carried out the biggest attack in the last one month. Five soldiers were martyred in this attack. Terrorists carried out four attacks in the month of June. Experts believe that these attacks cannot happen with out Pakistan’s help. Because Monday’s attack is being con sidered a big attack. Actually, the situation in Kashmir has changed since the removal of Article 370. The number of tourists has increased to a record level. The atmosphere in the valley had started be coming normal. There was also a huge reduction in ter rorist incidents. According to the government, between 2019 and 2023, a total of 579 terrorist incidents took place in which 818 terrorists were killed. Earlier, the number used to be in thousands. A total of 43 incidents took place in 2023. Whereas in 2024, 22 terrorist incidents have taken place so far. Half a dozen incidents have taken place in the last one month itself. In a way, terrorists are directly challenging the Modi 3.0 government. Although steps are being taken by the government, but the biggest question is how the terrorists’ morale has increased again. There is no doubt that whatev er coalition governments were in place before 2014, the mo rale of terrorists was always high. The entire Jammu and Kashmir was considered a dis turbed area. But the situation changed after the formation of the majority government in 2014. Although there were big attacks like Pulwama, the Modi government destroyed terrorist hideouts in Pakistan by conducting surgical and air strikes and gave a direct mes sage to the whole world that India now attacks even inside homes. In Modi 2.0, the government gained international attention by abolishing Article 370 in Kashmir, a move that fun damentally reshaped the re gion’s geopolitical landscape. This decision, which ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, was hailed as historic by supporters but drew strong opposition from parties like Congress, who criticized it as a political maneuver rather than a move

Kathua attack: 5 slain soldiers hailed from Uttarakhand, CM Dhami pays tributes

Attack took place on Monday when a group of heavily-armed terrorists ambushed a patrolling party in Badnota area

Dehradun, July 9

The five Army personnel killed in a terrorist attack on a patrolling party in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir hailed from Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Tuesday, asserting that their sacrifice will not go in vain.

“Five brave soldiers of Uttarakhand attained martyrdom during the cowardly terrorist attack in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir. This is a moment of great pain for all of us,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a statement.

“Our bravehearts made the supreme sacrifice for their motherland in keeping with the rich military tradition of Uttarakhand,” he said, adding their “sacrifice will not go in vain”.

Terrorists, who are the enemies of humanity and guilty of this cowardly attack, will not be spared at any cost, he said, adding the people who sheltered them will also have to face the consequences.

He said the entire state stands with their families in this hour of grief.

The chief minister also paid his tribute to those killed through separate posts on X.

The martyred army personnel are Rifleman Anuj Negi from Pauri, Nayab Subedar Anand Singh Rawat from Rudraprayag, Naik Vinod Singh from Tehri, Kamal Singh from Pauri and Adarsh Negi from Tehri.

The attack took place on Monday when a group of heavily-armed terrorists ambushed a patrolling party in Badnota area in Kathua. A massive search operation is underway to nab the terrorists behind the ambush in which five people were also injured.

Kathua ambush

India needs to review military, diplomatic options

THE killing of five Army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, in an ambush by heavily armed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district has compounded the internal security challenge for the Narendra Modi government, barely a month after it assumed office for the third time. This is the latest in a series of terror incidents, beginning with the attack on a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi district on June 9 — the very day the new government was installed in Delhi.

The situation is deteriorating despite PM Modi’s go-ahead to officials to deploy the ‘full spectrum of counter-terror capabilities’. Pakistan-based terror groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba have stepped up activities in the Jammu region through their local agents and recruits. The government, which is gearing up to conduct the long-delayed Assembly elections in J&K by September, has its work cut out.

Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane has vowed that the sacrifice of soldiers will not go unavenged and India will defeat the evil forces behind the Kathua attack. The onus is on India to review its military and diplomatic options. The naming and shaming of Pakistan on international forums has not been of much help as Islamabad has continued to play the victim card, claiming that it is more sinned against than sinning as far as terrorism is concerned. Dependent on its allies for the first time in a decade, the ruling BJP may find it tough to adopt a typically muscular approach. During the Modi government’s first term, cross-border ‘surgical strikes’ were carried out in the wake of the September 2016 Uri terror attack, while the Balakot airstrikes were conducted in retaliation for the February 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing. It’s an ‘enough is enough’ scenario all over again, but Modi 3.0 might have to restrict itself to efforts to restore peace in J&K without crossing any red line.

Kathua ambush: 24 detained as search operation for terrorists continues in dense forests of Jammu and Kashmir

Search teams being supported by helicopter and UAV surveillance, say officials

Jammu, July 10

At least 24 people have been detained for questioning as the hunt for the terrorists behind the ambush in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, in which five Army personnel were killed, entered its third day on Wednesday, officials said.

The search operation by the Army and police is under way amid intermittent heavy rain in dense forests across four districts, besides Kathua. It was launched from three different areas—Kathua, Udhampur and Bhaderwah, official said.

Security forces have detained 24 people for questioning in connection with the ambush, they said, as efforts continued to track down and neutralise the terrorists who are believed to be hiding in a forest.

The officials said another search operation is under way in the higher reaches of Doda district where a gunfight took place between terrorists and security forces on Tuesday evening, a day after the ambush in Kathua.

On the search operation linked to the Kathua ambush, the officials said Army and police personnel are also deployed in dense forests in different parts of Udhampur, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts.

Fresh searches were also launched in the Lala Chack area of Samba, Manjakote area of Rajouri and Surankote of Poonch on Wednesday morning, they said.

On Monday, terrorists ambushed a patrol party on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar mountainous road near Badnota village in Lohai Malhar, around 150 km from the Kathua district headquarters, killing the five Army personnel and injuring as many.

From the Bhaderwah side, security personnel are moving cautiously because of the area’s challenging topography, thick foliage and natural caves, the officials said.

Personnel of the Army’s special forces “Para” unit have also been deployed to conduct surgical operations in specific areas, they said.

The officials said the search teams are being supported by helicopter and UAV surveillance. In addition, sniffer dogs have been deployed and metal detectors are being used, particularly dense forest areas, of the region.

They said a team of the National Investigation Agency has visited the scene of the ambush and it is assisting police in the probe.

On the Doda search operation, officials said police and Army personnel are combing the Ghadi Bhagwah forest area, which is around 35 km east of Doda town and borders Kishtwar district.

The operation to hunt down two terrorists, who are believed to have suffered injuries in the Tuesday encounter, resumed early on Wednesday. The terrorists are yet to be traced, the officials said.

In the backdrop of the ambush in Badnota in Kathua, residents of Badnota village and its adjoining villages said they were concerned about their safety.

They have demanded that village defence groups be sanctioned for their self-defence and to effectively tackle of threats posed by terrorists.

“The government should provide weapons and training to us, we are ready to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with our forces against the terrorists,” Jagdish Raj, a local, said.

Punkaj, a 20-year-old student, said the ambush has caused fear among the local populace but “the situation changes altogether when you have weapons in your hands”.

“We can swiftly move into the forests and help tackle the threat of terrorism,” he said, demanding a special recruitment drive for the local youth of the area.

Shahid Ahmad, who claimed to have moved from the higher reaches to Machedi due to terror threat, said Muslims and Hindus of the area want peace and are ready to assist security forces in wiping out terrorism.

“Our eyes filled with tears with the loss of our soldiers. Such an attack had never happened (here) even during the peak of terrorism over two decades ago,” he said, adding that the government should provide weapons and training to them to fight the menace.

Ahmad said innocent villagers, who have moved with their flocks of livestock to the upper reaches, are compelled to provide food to terrorists as they threatened at gunpoint.

“We are with our forces in the fight against terrorism,” he said.

Pakistan completes long-awaited bridge at Kartarpur Corridor zero line after delay of more than 2 years

The need for the Kartarpur bridge arose from the vulnerability of the zero-line area to flooding

PTI

Lahore, July 9

Pakistan has finally completed the 420-metre-long bridge at the Kartarpur Corridor zero line after a delay of two-and-a-half years, an official said on Tuesday.

The need for the Kartarpur bridge arose from the vulnerability of the zero-line area to flooding, emphasising the importance of constructing a safe and secure passage for the visitors of the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Management Unit Deputy Secretary Saifullah Khokhar told PTI.

“We have completed the bridge from our side on the zero-line Kartarpur Corridor. Now it is up to India to complete its side of the bridge, especially a 10-ft disputed one,” he said.

“The bridge will be functional once the Indian side is completed,” Khokhar added.

Earlier, flooding incidents had disrupted visitors’ movement to Kartarpur Sahib.

The first deadline to complete the construction of the 420-metre-long bridge was December 2021. The construction works, however, had come to a halt temporarily because of some financial constraints and political issues.

The Public Development Fund funded the project with an estimated cost of PKR 4.53 million. The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak) collaborated to carry out the construction.

In November 2019, then Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan inaugurated the Kartarpur Corridor at a ceremony, paving the way for Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit one of their holiest sites in Pakistan without needing a visa.

The 4-km-long Kartarpur corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan with the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district in India’s Punjab.
