Drones sent from Pak for 7 to 8 times to deliver arms in Punjab: Police

GPS-fitted drones capable of lifting up to 10 kg flew in from Pakistan seven to eight times to airdrop the cache of arms, ammunition and fake currency seized in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, a police probe revealed on Wednesday.

It was the first incident reported in Punjab, in which drones were used to drop weapons and communication devices, among others, from across the border, an official said, adding that a half-burnt drone used in the operation was recovered from Tarn Taran.

Punjab Police on Sunday had claimed to have busted a terror module of the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), backed by a group based in Pakistan and Germany. It said the terror group was conspiring to unleash a series of strikes in Punjab and adjoining states.

Four members of the module–Balwant Singh, alias Nihang, Akashdeep Singh alias Akash Randhawa, Harbhajan Singh and Balbir Singh–were arrested from the outskirts of Chohla Sahib village in Tarn Taran on the same day.

During questioning, the accused told investigators that GPS-fitted “big” drones were used to drop arms and ammunition from across the border in Tarn Taran district, an official of the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police said on Wednesday.

“Drones were sent from across the border for seven to eight times to deliver arms and ammunition,” the official said, adding that consignment of weapons was delivered this month.

One drone could lift up to 10 kg of weight, he added.

Five AK-47 rifles, 16 magazines and 472 rounds of ammunition, four Chinese-made .30 bore pistols, along with eight magazines and 72 rounds of ammunition; nine hand grenades, five satellite phones with their ancillary equipment, two mobile phones, two wireless sets and fake currency with a face value of Rs 10 lakh were seized.

Though investigations are under way, it is believed that the weapons meant were to be used to spread terror in Jammu and Kashmir. PTI

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Monday said Pakistan has reactivated Balakot very recently and about 500 infiltrators were waiting to infiltrate into India.

“Balakot has been reactivated by Pakistan very recently. That shows that Balakot has been affected. It had been damaged and destroyed. And that is why people have got away from there and now it has been reactivated,” he told reporters at the Officers Training Academy here.

He said around 500 infiltrators were waiting to infiltrate into the country.

“…some action had been taken by Indian Air Force and now they have got the people back there,” he said.

Earlier, Indian Air Force had carried out attack at terror camps in Balakot in retaliation to the deadly terror attacks on CRPF personnel in Pulwama in February this year. PTI

Declare Hari Singh’s birthday public holiday, says son Karan

Declare Hari Singh’s birthday public holiday, says son Karan

Tribune News Service

Jammu, September 20

Senior Congress leader and former Sadr-e-Riyasat Karan Singh today requested Governor Satya Pal Malik for declaring a public holiday on the birthday of his father and last Dogra ruler of J&K Maharaja Hari Singh on September 23.

The demand has been made amid the growing clamour for public holiday on the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh by various Jammu-based groups.

“For many years, there has been a strong demand to declare the birthday of my father Maharaja Hari Singh ji as a public holiday. In fact, both my sons had a resolution to this effect passed in the Legislative Council some years ago but so far no action has been taken,” Karan Singh said in a statement issued today.

“The birth anniversary will be on Monday, September 23. Let us recall that it was due to Maharaja Hari Singh ji that Jammu and Kashmir became a part of India when he signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947. Apart from that he was a progressive and farsighted ruler who instituted many social and economic reforms for the welfare of the people. For example as far back as 1929 he had declared all temples in the state open to Dalits,” Karan Singh said.

The BJP, which had been facing criticism for its failure to effectively raise the issue of public holiday while remaining part of the previous government, has planned to hold a ‘Jan Jagran Abhiyaan rally’ on September 22 at Maharaja Hari Singh Park.

The rally is expected to be attended by the top national leaders, including Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national vice-president Shyam Jaju, Union Minister of State for PMO Jitendra Singh, and Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur.

On July 10, Karan Singh had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for declaring the name of the Jammu airport after Maharaja Hari Singh. In his letter, he had said it would be a fitting tribute to the man who signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947.

Possibility of terror incidents along India’s coastline remains: Rajnath

Aboard the INS Vikramaditya, September 29

The threat of terror incidents along the Indian coastline remains and a neighbouring country is involved in “nefarious” actions to destabilise India, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday.

Singh was speaking to reporters on board the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya which is currently sailing along India’s western coastline.

Asked about terror threats along the country’s coastline, the defence minister said, “Any country in the world should have adequate security for itself. We cannot rule out any possibilities (of terror threats).”

“When the question of our neighbouring country comes, you know very well that to destabilise and to break India up, it keeps taking nefarious actions (napak har katein),” Singh said in an apparent reference to Pakistan.

During his overnight stay on the INS Vikramaditya, Singh witnessed various military exercises involving submarines, frigates and the carrier.

“I can say this with complete belief that our Indian Navy has a solid and attentive presence here for maritime security. There is not an iota of doubt,” Singh said, adding that a Mumbai-like incident cannot be allowed to recur.

“We cannot forget what happened on 26/11/2008 (the Mumbai attack). If some mistake has happened once, it must not be repeated again at any cost. Therefore, our Indian Navy and Coast Guard always remain vigilant,” he said.

On the Army Chief’s statement that terrorists have again come into play in Pulwama, Singh said,”No one needs to tell what will happen to the terrorists who have come into existence.”

Not only in India, the whole world knows what will happen to terrorists, the Defence Minister said.

Singh, after a yoga session on the aircraft carrier early Sunday morning, said yoga has been accepted not only in India but across the world.

“It has got international recognition, and the credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.

“He presented this resolution (on yoga) at the United Nations and it received the support of 177 countries. In almost all the countries, there is a substantial population, which practices yoga,” the Defence Minister said. PTI

Indian Army tanks now have sharper night vision equipment developed by DRDO idrw.org .Read more at India No 1 Defence News Website https://idrw.org/indian-army-tanks-now-have-sharper-night-vision-equipment-developed-by-drdo/ .

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has indigenously developed Thermal Imaging and Day Sight equipment to arm the tanks in Indian Army’s inventory with a sharper night vision, ThePrint has learnt. The night vision equipment, to be installed in the T-72 and T-90 tanks, is meant for a clearer night vision even in pitch darkness. It will have a higher range of sight as compared to the existing technology, said a DRDO official. It can be used for both day and night operations, and also boasts of superior image processing features at any given time of the day. Further, it will serve the same purpose on both varieties of tanks, only the mechanics would be different, added the official who didn’t wish to be named. Out of an order of about 1,000 units of the night vision equipment for the T-72 tanks, nearly 300 have already been delivered to the Army, said the official. For these tanks, the  equipment will have a 3-km range for tank targets. The night vision equipment being developed for the T-90 tanks will have a range of around 4 km and will help in “battlefield surveillance, acquisition and firing on targets” and provide a “hunter-killer” capability to tank commander, said the DRDO official. The equipment units for the T-90 tanks are yet to be delivered. The night vision equipment has been developed by DRDO’s Instruments Research and Development Establishment, and is being jointly produced by Bharat Electronics Limited, Machilipatnam, and Ordnance Factory, Dehradun. Upgraded technology The DRDO official told ThePrint, “So far, image intensive tubes were used for night sight in the tanks which had a range of 150-200 metres and also required some amount of light to process a clear image. This was an old technology. Now, it will be replaced with the new equipment developed by us.” There are over 5,000 tanks in the Indian Army’s inventory. A senior Army officer told ThePrint that the latest equipment will provide better vision at night as it is a technology upgrade for the tanks over the existing one. “The project started around 2011-2012 and it has been a collaborative effort between the DRDO and the Army. “The equipment is working well for the T-72 tanks, but there have been some issues with the ones for T-90 tanks. We are working on it and hopefully they should be sorted out soon,” said the officer, who did not want to be named.

Why are you only bothered about Muslims in Kashmir and not in China: US asks Pakistan

Why are you only bothered about Muslims in Kashmir and not in China: US asks Pakistan

United Nations, September 27

The US has asked Pakistan why it is only bothered about    the human rights of Muslims in Kashmir and is not highlighting the “horrific conditions” that continue to exist for the members of the community throughout China.

Alice Wells, US Acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, during a special briefing at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly criticised Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for not speaking out against China, which has detained an estimated one million Uyghurs and other Turkic-speaking Muslims in Xinjiang province.

China is an all-weather ally of Pakistan. Beijing has often come to the rescue of Islamabad by trying to scuttle global efforts to impose sanctions against Pakistan-based terrorists like Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar and Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

China has been providing financial help to cash-strapped Pakistan to overcome its economic woes.

“I would like to see the same level of concern expressed also about Muslims who are being detained in Western China, literally in concentration-like conditions.

“And so being concerned about the human rights of Muslims does extend more broadly than Kashmir, and you’ve seen the administration very involved here during the UN General Assembly and trying to shine a light on the horrific conditions that continue to exist for Muslims throughout China,” Wells said. — PTI

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval chaired a high-level meeting here on Thursday and directed security officials to intensify anti-militancy operations and work towards improving the life of common people in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

Doval, who returned to the national capital after arriving here on Wednesday, held a series of meetings with security officials and bureaucrats during which he made it clear that common people should be able to exercise their daily routine without any fear from terrorist groups, they said.

This is his second visit after the Centre abrogated provisions of Article 370 in the state on August 5 and bifurcated it into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, which will come into being on October 31 with the swearing-in ceremony of first Lt Governors.

During the meeting, the National Security Advisor (NSA) reviewed the developmental schemes for people and asked officials for their speedy implementation, which includes providing best health care, shipment of apple boxes out of the Kashmir Valley, among other things.

The NSA also reviewed the security situation and directed the officials to intensify anti-militancy operations and target key terrorists operating in certain parts of the Valley, the officials said.

“Deeply anguished to learn the ruthless killing of Deputy Sheriff of Harris County, Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal. He represented the Sikh community with pride and was the first turbaned police officer of America. My condolences to his family. RIP,” the CM tweeted.

At least 8 drone sorties target Jammu and Kashmir as Pak-based groups airdrop weapons

Some of the weapons dropped into India.

At least eight drone sorties, carrying a total of 80 kg of weapons (arms and ammunition), were sent across the border into Punjab by Pakistan-based Khalistani terror groups between September 9 and 16, officials in security agencies and the Punjab Police have confirmed on condition of anonymity.

The entire consignment, using the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) network, was supported by Pakistan’s spy agency Inter Services Intelligence and orchestrated through Germany and Lahore; the ultimate aim — to fuel terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir.

The details of these drops have emerged following investigations that led to and following the September 22 weapons seizure at Tarn Taran district; the eight payloads were dropped in Amritsar and Tarn Taran.

Five people have so far been arrested by Punjab Police in connection with the drone drops, with one 22-year-old Subhdeep held on Tuesday. Investigators said he was from Amritsar district and was radicalised by the prime accused in the case, Mann Singh, and another accused, Akashdeep, in Amritsar jail. The other four people, suspected to belong to a terror module, were arrested from the outskirts of village Chohla Sahib in Tarn Taran on Sunday. They were using a white Maruti Swift with a Punjab registration number.

The investigation involved multiple agencies – the Punjab Police, central security agencies, the Border Security Force, the Indian Air Force – and prima facie found that multiple Chinese commercial drones with 10 kg payloads have been used in the weapons drop operations across the border. The drones, the investigation reveals, may have been launched from locations 2 km inside Pakistan and made to travel the distance of five kilometres at a height of 2,000 feet, and then dropped off the weapons after descending to 1200 ft. The payload was slung from the platform using Chinese mountaineering ropes.

With drone activity also being seen in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, the IAF and BSF have been asked by the Punjab police to intercept these unmanned aerial vehicles through low-level radars and destroy them. Officials fear that they could also be used to carry and drop off bombs.

The interrogation of those arrested has revealed that KZF’s Germany-based operative Gurmeet Singh Bagga in coordination with his Pakistan-based chief Ranjeet Singh aka Neeta have made deliveries of at least four weapons, grenades, electronics, and fake currency through drones. The deliveries were made on the intervening nights of September 6/7, 9/10 and the last one on 15/16. The last drone crashed at Rajoke Village, Khalra police station, in Tarn Taran, near a border drain which is 2km from the fencing on the international border with Pakistan. The entire operation came to light after the discovery of the burnt drone, whose eight Chinese batteries were stripped off by the accused on instructions from across the border. “ It has also been revealed that such deliveries took place on four different dates, mostly between 9.30 pm and 10.30 pm with the drone making two sorties within an hour,” said a senior Punjab Police official. As many as five AK-47 rifles, which weigh about four kilograms with magazine, four Chinese pistols , nine HE grenades, ₹10 lakh fake currency, 1000 rounds of ammunition and two electronic receivers were recovered by the police from the accused.

The main concern of Indian security agencies is the revelation that entire consignment was meant for Islamist groups in Kashmir. “ We are not very clear as to how many other consignment has made their way into Kashmir using similar modus operandi and with the help of Pakistan based Sikh terrorists,” said a senior security official.
